Most left turn collisions with oncoming traffic occur at green lights-
which are found in abundance in Florida! Few left-turn collisions
occur at blinking red arrows.
In Michigan and most NORTHERN states where traffic engineers seem to
display more intelligence and are quick to react to injury and death
statistics:
They know that a blinking red left-turn arrow (as well as a blinking
left-turn yellow arrow)is well understood by all drivers to mean:
oncoming traffic has the green light and does not stop!
Many Florida left turn lanes do not have their OWN left-turn COMPLETE
signal configuration. Florida left-turn signals are often combined
with the signal for the thru lane(s) which are to the right. The
result is a massive continuing epidemic of collisions with oncoming
traffic. It's time for Florida traffic engineers to WAKE UP and
standardize with the rest of the country!.
Left-turn carnage is EPIDEMIC in Florida!
The man in a position to correct all the left-turn carnage is:

Being that there's a lot of northern state people here, including
myself, I can easily verify that you are wrong when you believe that
northern states use a lot of red blinking arrows. Outside of
Delaware, I can't really think of any place where I've seen them.

Reply: How often are you planning on reposting this thoroughly
debunked position of yours, just out of curiosity? This is like the
10th thread you've started on your false premise.
They are all over Michigan-blinking red thru and left turn lights.
Also blinking red left turn arrows.
Ah, I see... so you are admitting that you lied when you said these
blinking left arrows are all over most of the northern states?
Michigan is but one. I was born and raised in the northeast and have
driven all over those states, starting in 1968. I have never once seen
a blinking left red arrow used for a permissive left. That would be
counter-intuitive. A green ball is the only signal that for decades
has meant you may make a permissive left when traffic is clear.
Everyone well understands this.
Show me ONE with left turn carnage like the one in Palmetto,
Florida.
So, then you also admit that you are grossly mischaracterizing the
national situation. Thank you. If there is no other intersection like
this one you describe in Palmetto, then the lack of blinking left red
arrows nationwide must surely indicate to all of us that the blinking
red left arrow is not a solution. At tens of thousands of
intersections nationwide, drivers at this very moment are making
permissive lefts on green ball signals and have never in their lives
seen a blinking red left arrow.
I suggest you look at that one intersection, if it is a problem, and
try to come up with a real solution rather than advocate use of a
bizarre signal that requires motorist action that is against
expectations.
In fact, in most places, you simply turn left on green. Just like in
Florida. And there's no epidemic of people dying due to it.
you don't know what you're taking about because you haven't looked
into the accident records.
No, you don't know what you are talking about. He is correct. No
driver has ever thought he had the right of way to turn in front of
oncoming traffic with only a green ball. The only signal that has ever
meant that you have a protected left turn is the steady green left
arrow. Anything else means opposing traffic may be proceeding in your
path if you turn.
Oh, btw, Delaware is discontinuing a lot of blinking red arrows.
Appearantly, they cause accidents as people speed thru the blinking
arrow.
Why? Probably because the green and yellow arrows are too short to
handle all the left-turn traffic. This is usually the case when the
local traffic engineer is an idiot or has a brother in the auto repair
business!
He told you. They cause accidents. It's probably because of the
confusion over what red blinking arrow might possibly mean. I've never
seen one. I likely wouldn't have any idea what it meant had I not read
these discussions about the poorly designed use of them in Michigan. A
permissive left shouldn't require a full stop first, as a flashing red
arrow indicates, if the opposing lanes are clear.
A green ball has always meant you may turn left if safe to do so. A
flashing red arrow not only doesn't add any bit of safety to that, but
it requires full stops first and encourages law breaking because
people with clear opposing traffic will not come to a stop.
