What camera do you have now?
What I'm looking at is a Nikon S10 or a P5000.
Anyone have experience with these or have other recommendations? I do a lot
of "point & shoot", but not a lot of moving pictures.
It really depends on what you want to take pictures of and what you
want to do with those pictures. If all you want are 4x6" prints for
yourself you can go cheaper, but if you want 8x10 or 9x12
enlargements, slides for a presentation, or images for publication,
you will need better qualtiy.
Presumably you're asking for road and bridge photography. You would
need both a wide angle and telephoto lens of good quality for the
various images. You may want a close up lens to capture details of
ornamentation or dedication plaques. You want capability of a tripod
and time exposure to make the dramatic night shots. You want ability
to add a Polaroid filter to get the dramatic dark blue skies and
reduce glare. You don't want a flash, at least, you need to turn it
off. You need clear manual settings because often you will need to
maximize your depth of field or freeze motion. The camera should
accomodate a tripod and cable release.
I have always had good luck with Nikon equipment. I have
traditionally preferred SLR, but recent changes may make that
unnecessary. For myself I was thinking of their new low-end SLR.
As to the other post, this IS an on-topic question in how photography
is best done for roads and bridges.
The railroad newsgroup has many photographers and the applications are
similar.
