Don't believe a word of it. Roadgeeking is a legitimate and healthy
hobby (though perhaps not common)
and anyone who believes that it is a sign of mental illness likely has
a few issues of their own.
Some people take their hobby--any hobby--to extreme levels. If they
obsess over their hobby to the exclusion of everything else, or
perhaps take undue risks (e.g. going on dangerous places to take
photos), they might have a problem. Another example would be a movie
buff who goes to great extremes to get an actor's autograph in person.
As for "Aspergers" like many things these days it is a convenient
label (like ADHD) which
mental health "professionals" use to covertly stigmatize and limit the
opportunities of an individual
who has not completely conformed to ridiculous societal/cultural
"norms," as if the commonly accepted
norms of this day and age are legitimate.
That's not completely accurate. Some people do have legitimate
problems that interfere with their doing well in school or getting
along with other people. That can adversely affect their careers and
lives.
Whether we like it or not, we do live in a society, and society does
have "societal/cultural "norms" ". If we want to do well in the world
we do need to comply with those norms to a reasonable extent. It
certainly does not mean we have to be a slave to fashion, tastes, or
trends. Obessive or inappropriate _behavior_, regardless of the
subject, tends to irritate other people.
I do not think such diagnoses, which are normally confidential, limit
ones opportunities. Rather, one's own behaivor can cause problems.
A flip side is sometimes those diagnosis qualify an individual for
funding for counseling and extra help that is warranted.
My son has been diagnosed with Asperger's. All I'd say is that it's a
logical fallacy at work to state that all roadgeeks have Asperger's.
Being obsessed with vehicles, signs, and roads CAN be a characteristic
of those that have Asperger's, but it would be wrong to make the
diagnosis solely based on such (sort of like how a square is always a
rectangle but a rectangle isn't always a square).
