Ok, this is a bit off-topic, but I want to use it solely for this
group...
Google groups has 6,000 threads. All the newsreaders I've tried
(outlook, newsrover, forte agent - which I never had any luck with)
only download a pidding 300 *messages*! What do you use?
I use Thunderbird for MacOSX and can set it to download as many messages as I
want at a time.
My Thunderbird for Winblows XPee does likewise. After my latest little
re-format and re-install Winblows fiasco (now aiming a 22mm artillery
gun in the general direction of Redmond, WA ;-) ), I told Thunderbird to
download the newest 100,000 messages in the group. (As of now, 100K
messages takes us back to February 2005. Hell, that's about half of what
my news host, Giganews, even retains for this group.)

Even with a 6Mbps cable-modem connection, it still took about 15 minutes
to download that many messages.

You alluded to this in your post, but its important to say it
explicitly: how many messages you can download is dependent on your
news server, and not for most clients.

Good point, although I ought to further clarify it a bit: *the maximum
number* of messages that can be downloaded is dependent on the news
server's retention, assuming no additional restrictions imposed by
newsreader client software.

Some low-cost or free usenet
servers will only keep a comparatively few number of posts.

That's exactly why I stopped using Teranews' free servers a couple years
ago, and signed up for an $8/month plan with Giganews. The retention on
the free Teranews service was probably one-fourth of what I know
Giganews has for this group.
