Coming back to Omaha (sort of, I had to take something of a scenic
route) tonight, at Midnight tonight, I was a couple miles south of the
Nebraska-Kansas border on US 75, crossed the border, went north to
Auburn, turned east toward Missouri on US 136, crossed the Brownville
bridge, stopped at one of the truck stops at Rock Port, turned north
on I-29 and at 1:10 am reached the Hamburg, Iowa exit on I-29. Just
curious if one can do 4 states quicker than that (other than by
speeding and not stopping).
Looking around the OK panhandle, I came up with a 115-mile drive that
would take you into five states and could be done in about 2 hr 10
minutes.
From Elkhart KS, on the OK border, go southwest on US 56 and US 64 to
Boise City, then north toward Campo CO on US 385, turn around just
inside the CO state line back to Boise City, then on again on US 64
toward NM. About three miles into NM, on the way to Clayton, you will
nip the extreme NW corner of the TX panhandle. Stop at the corner
monument to claim it.
Any other five-state trips that short?
Reconfiguring to start from the CO-KS-OK tripoint using county roads,
which cuts off about two miles from the old Elkhart starting point and
eliminates to long and time consuming detour up toward Campo to bag
CO, the five states can be done in 74 miles, likely an hour, 20
minutes.
