U.S. Mob-Rule County Clinchers -- An Analysis

I wanted to see if there were any geographic patterns of the American
county clinchers on mob-rule.com (i.e. do people from a particular
region or state travel more than others?). Of course, there are all
sorts of problems with the data (self-reporting of counties clinched,
loose definition of "hometown," small sample size, etc.), but the
numbers are fun to play with.

When you divide the number of counties clinched by the number of
clinchers per state, Missouri comes out on top with an average of
878.89 counties per clincher (Californians visited the most counties
overall, but there were more of them; average = 492.52 per clincher).
Rhode Island was not represented, and ND had a single clincher who has
been to four counties. Delaware has a clincher who has 40 counties,
and SD had two clinchers that had an average of 125.5. So, pick which
state you think had the least along whatever criteria you can come up
with.

However, by state is one thing. Are those clinchers in the same
region as MO just as likely to go the distance? Using the U.S. Census
Divisions (Pacific, Mountain, West North Central, East North Central,
West South Central, East South Central, South Atlantic, Middle
Atlantic, and New England), I calculated the average per region.

Those in the East North Central division (MI, WI, IL, IN, OH) have the
top average of 585.49 counties per clincher, while those in the mid-
Atlantic states (NY, PA, NJ) have the least, at 333.83. West North
Central, the division with Missouri (also ND, SD, NE, KS, MN, and IA),
came in right in the middle of the rank with an average of 450.60 (ND,
SD, and NE weigh down the average considerably, given that MN is also
a state that produces productive clinchers).

The Northeast crowd are the least county-clinched (both New England
and Mid-Atlantic are the bottom two spots). Then again, in my
hometown New England high school, most kids traveled to Europe than
spent time traveling anywhere in the US (Tories, the lot of 'em!).

And, for those of you who would criticize my use of the census
divisions, I did averages for the regions as well. The Midwest region
(West North Central and East North Central states) still come out on
top, and the Northeast still comes out on bottom. Westerners also
seemed disinclined to clinch counties (the next two rungs above the NE
division, or the Census Region rank above NE).

Of course, this analysis is far too crude as to get at the reasons why
those in the Midwest and South may be clinching more counties. I
leave it up to you to speculate.

In any matter, here is the data. From left to right: NumMem = number
of clinchers in the state. State = State. NumCount = # of counties
clinched per state. Ratio = counties clinched per clincher per
state. Division = Census Division. Average = # of counties per
clincher per census division. Division = Census Division to align
with Average. For census regions, see even further below.

Enjoy, and I fully expect to hear about math/Excel errors...
