Well, allow me to comment on this point.

It's disappointing to me only if I waste my time reading through the
"noise". In my newsreader, I automatically mark any thread "As Read"
that has anything to do with "Aunt Judy" or any of the other spam/
stupid flamewars around here. So, to me, the signal is very loud and
the noise is almost nil.

It's kind of like television: Do you like everything on TV? Including
advertisements and infomercials? Heck no! I just choose to pay atten-
tion to the stuff I enjoy and ignore the crap I don't. Marking entire
flamewar/spam threads "As Read" in my newsreader is like TIVOing past
commercials or getting up to use the facilities and make a sandwich
during that time. The last thing I do is pay attention to every last
commercial I see on TV, so the last thing I'd do here is to pay
attention to every last useless post.

And finally, the "noise" here today is no different than the "noise"
that has been here for years. Trolls and spammers come and go all the
time. Think of the amount of crap Keith Butkovich brought here a few
years back and he's loooooooong gone, yet we're still here talking
about roads.
