Don't large immovable objects in the median help prevent crossover accidents? A few years ago NYSDOT cut down the trees in the median of I87 north of Albany and removed a lot of rock outcroppings in the median. There was a crossover accident during the construction project and now there is guardrail in the median. I though the trees and rocks were better looking than the flat median with a guardrail.
