I am trying to save an image on a transparent background. Using Paint

Pro OR Gimp, a background is added automatically even when I don't want

Has anyone else encountered a problem?
Has to be in a format that supports transparency: GIF or PNG (others?).
I'm using GIF and it tells me that because of the format the image will be
saved as a merged file (even if I have a transparent background).
Both PSP & Gimp do this.
Make sure you are using "GIF89a", which the later version of GIF which
supports transparency (and animation, for that matter). The earlier
version (GIF87a) does not.
