Maybe now is the time for a substantial increase in the gas tax.
There is a lot of bridge and construction work that needs to be done,
and the money has to be there. And to encourage conservation. If oil
prices continue down, construction bids will come down like they were a
few years ago, with the big contractors begging for work.
Taxes are going up here, anyway. We just raised our sales tax another penny
for street improvements (such as widening AR 265 from 3 to 5 lanes instead
of waiting for AHTD to do it). So much for our mayor bragging about the
"lowest sales tax in NWA". Not anymore!!
I wonder how WVA will fare. Their road-funding program is facing a
severe crisis, brought by decreased federal spending and increased
maintaince headaches brought on by an aging highway system. Add onto
the highway projects to improve the transportation network in WVA, and
it will take 300+ years to complete it (taken from a H-D article)!
