A lot of work has been done on the remaining portion of the new
interchange at I-96 & 36th Street (Exit 44), southeast of Grand Rapids.
Last year, as many of you will recall, 36th Street was extended by the
Kent County Road Commission to connect to Thornapple River Drive,
providing access around the south side of the Gerald R. Ford
International Airport. In turn, MDOT planned and started to build an
interchange and short connector road between I-96 and the new 36th
Street extension.
The eastbound interchange movements were completed and opened last
year. It would appear that the westbound movements may open as early as
next week.
All roadways and overpasses appear to be complete. The overpasses have
some interesting "wave" designs built into some the sidewalls.
All signs are also up, and take note of this: all BGS' are in FHWA font
(I believe these signs were fabbed at least a year ago). The new
westbound signage is much like eastbound: there is a gantry for Exit
44, with an advance sign for the following exit (in this case, Exit 43,
M-11 aka 28th Street). There is also a mast arm sign for Exit 43, just
before the Kraft Avenue overpass.
There are merge/weave lanes going in both directions for all movements
between this interchange and the two adjacent ones (Exits 43 and Exit
46, M-6).
