Atlantic Avnue in Brooklyn does that too, just west of Pennsylvania
Avenue. Think of it, Sunrise is six lanes with shoulders so if you
raise to lanes each way and then cantiver it over the exit to form
turning lanes, that would work! Oh, and Woodhaven Boulevard has four
thru lanes...I think. That is such a cool idea, that may also work for
NY 347?
I think the overpass concept would work for lots of intersections on
Long Island - I remember reading of a Florida city which wanted to add
scores of these intersection overpasses (which again, are more or less
diamond interchanges), but in the end only ended up with 6 or so due to
cost :(
I prefer having the overpass take the center lanes (through) lanes, and
the local lanes be the outside (to continue to service any businesses
located on the side of Sunrise). Jersey has a number of these too
(some are underpasses), but Long Island seems afraid of the concept.
Another cool idea that I have only seen in Jersey (although this may be
pretty common elsewhere) but which Long Island could desperately use
is... You approach a diamond interchange on the service road of a
depressed center Expressway (think 440 in Perth Amboy) - right before
the intersecting road there is on the left a separate U-turn lane
(which shares the bridge of the intersecting road, but is traffic
separated from it) which you can use to get the service road going in
the opposite direction - much smoother and more logical than futzing
around wasting time at the lights at the intersection to make one left,
then waiting for the next light to make another left.
