Heh, I'm afraid to say it, but pretty much anyone who has frequently
commuted on Sunrise Highway in Nassau County has come up with a similar
plan, albiet not in as much detail - I know I have, over a decade ago,
with similar concepts of placing the LIRR in the median and shifting
Sunrise Highway over in several areas - and yes, tunnels in the tight
downtowns of Lynbrook, Rockville Centre, Freeport and so on (I like
cantilever roads, but that would not work in, say Rockville Centre -
the ROW as it is too tight, so retain the 6 local lanes ground level,
and add the through lanes underneath. I guess with the existing
development there there is little flexibility for any other grand
plans.
For now, I'd settle for 4-lane through overpasses at key intersections,
with local lanes on either side, such as Long Bearch Rd/Oceanside Rd,
Pennisular Blvd, Mill Road, etc. Yes, you're still hosed in the big 3
downtowns - Lynbrook, Rockville Centre, and Freeport (Valley Stream's
downtown really doesn't overlap Sunrise Highway much - you have an
McDonald's, a Car Wash, an Adult Store, and a Auto-Body shop + the
Diner - no vast loss there) but at a half dozen key intersections you
could really make a difference.
