Spent yesterday at Two Harbors, MN for a plant tour and then headed to
Gooseberry Falls State Park. And flew out early this morning (6:14 local)
and am back home in Albany by way of Detroit.
Roads Traveled: Lake Ave, I-35, MN 61, Lake County 2, Lake/St. Louis County
61.
Notes: In Duluth, there are four tunnels that carry I-35 under various
parks in Duluth. The longest is the fourth and final (if headed northbound)
near the Northern Terminus.
North on MN 61, immediately after I-35, are numerous old lake homes many
with stone siding and very pretty.
After going through that neighborhood, MN 61 splits onto the newer alignment
with a sign that reads "EXPRESSWAY to Two Harbors" Southbound on MN 61
after leaving Two Harbors reads "EXPRESSWAY to Duluth."
On Lake County/St. Louis County 61. St. Louis County 61 shields are the
traditional county pentagons. Lake County is a white square or rectangle
with black lettering.
County 61 hugs the north shore of Lake Superior and is part of the North
Shore Scenic Highway. Saw construction of a jetty for a new boat dock.
Saw county routes in Lake County: UT 119, 220R, etc. There were a whole
series of alphabetized 220 county routes off of Lake County 2 in Two
Harbors.
The two tunnels on MN 61 are very nice. They look recently rehabbed or
built?
Gooseberry Falls State Park is a great place to hike and explore.
Betty's Pies was worth the hype!
Ate dinner along old 61 at the Scenic Cafe. Very nice!
I was incorrect about the features of US 53 in Duluth. It is stone (appears
to be limestone or sandstone) and not brick.
I was able to on Wednesday morning see the lift bridge operate which was
actually nice to see. Sunrise over the lake is also very impressive!
All in all, I enjoyed the scenery and hospitality of Duluth and the North
Shore. I would love to spend more time there on a vacation someday.
