GIF is better than JPG for images with large regions of a solid
color, cartoonlike pictures or drawings with few colors. Like
graphics (not photos) of route shields. GIFs are limited to 256
colors. Jpegs create artifacts which create odd details in solid
color areas. Great for photos. PNGs have the best of both
worlds, and it's best if you keep all your work in this format and
convert to GIF or JPG only as the last step (if necessary).

I'll check my software...some of my pic's were done in AutoCAD LT
(best example is the I-99 pork shield) to see about export to GIF
or PNG (the graphic for that is in jpg).

My maps are in JPG because GIF looked like a checkerboard. The ones
done off the DeLorme software will get more work to make the shields
clearer (the ones in that software, especially Interstate, lose
clarity). Photos are in JPG due to my camera software.


I have a feeling that the main problem with the display of your maps,
pictures and figures is that you are using the 'width' and 'height'
HTML attributes to size the pictures. When you do this, it tends to
just remove rows and columns of pixels to meet the size specified
leading to the grungy(sp?) look to them during display. Once you get
a decent graphics program, use the resize function on that to size
your pictures as needed and use those files on the website (keep the
originals on your HD in case you need to make changes).


I did a quick check of the files; the LA does have a border but it
disappeared when I resized the sample from 250x250 to 100x100.
ow...Also left out Minnesota county road sample, which is a white
square instead of the standard blue pentagon. Could not tell from
the photo I examined what text is above the numeral in that case or
whether it had a border.
