Have not driven a new (well, new-ish) Ford in years. Is this just a
rental car thing or is this marketing gone mad? How much would BP pay
Ford for such a "recomendation"?
When I worked as a Customer Service Rep (read: cashier & full service pump
jockey) at a BP station in the early 90s, they told us Ford and BMW
recommended their products.
I don't think it's an exclusive thing. I think the auto manufacturers likely
said "here's a list of oil companies whose gas has been proven to work well
in our cars."
These days, here in SoCal, Chevron is advertising that their particular band
of overpriced piss-water meets some standard cooked up by the auto
manufacturers. I don't doubt it, but I don't think I'll be any worse off if I
buy from 76, Shell, Valero, ExxonMobil or ARCO/BP instead. Actually, I
usually buy gas at Valero or ARCO because it's 10-20 cents cheaper per
gallon, and their gas runs just fine in Old Faithful. :)

It's all fun and games until someone starts a bonfire in the living room.
I'll have to research the Jeep stuff (that's what I drive, '04
Wrangler), but I get acceptable results from Casey's. In my area
89-octane E10 runs the same price (some places cheaper) than regular 87
octane and gives me about 1 mpg improvement at average speed of 55
(nasty MO roads).
