Note that the article states that a distance of 500 yards is used to
determine the speed of the vehicle.
Excuse me? Do you know how wide a radar signal is at that distance? Sheesh
the thing would cover over 20 lanes of traffic easily. With no way of
knowing which vehicle was targeted, anyone cited undert these conditions
could easily beat it. Besides being RADIO, it is susceptible to zillions of
spurious radio signals which could effect the result as well.
Want to know what a radar gun signal is compared to? Take your every day
flashlight. One that can illuminate a hundred yards at least. Lay the
flashlight on a surface, turned on. Using two yardsticks, or rope, mark the
outer limits of the path of the light. Note the angle produced. Now extend
the length of those markers to 500 yards. Measure the distance between the 2
points. Now how many cars can you get in that area? 1?
Here's another test for radar signal coverage. Take 6 radar detectors, 1
radar gun. Place the gun in the center of a 100 ft circle. The detectors
placed on the edge of the circle. Turn all on. How many detectors beep? 1, 2
, 3 or all 6? I'll bet even money that 5 or all 6 beep.
