HMSHost Corporation, a world leader in travel food, beverage and retail
concessions, announced today the award of a contract to redevelop 18 travel
plazas along the Pennsylvania Turnpike. The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission
selected HMSHost's proposal following a competitive process that included
all major industry participants. The new contract term is 30 years with
estimated revenues to exceed $3.5 billion over the life of the contract.
Stretching approximately 530 miles, the Turnpike system is used by more than
190 million vehicles per year. As part of the new agreement, HMSHost plans
to spend over $100 million to revitalize the Turnpike travel plazas with
new, larger buildings that incorporate Pennsylvania architecture and
materials. Travel plaza visitors will experience a special blend of the best
national and regional restaurants, and exciting retail designs and products.
They can also expect a food court with natural, ambient lighting,
full-service convenience stores, and larger restrooms with increased
lighting and touch-free technology. Other plaza improvements will include
outdoor dining areas, landscaped grounds with pet walking paths, and
state-of-the-industry technology and security systems.
"The Commission and HMSHost have enjoyed a long business partnership
servicing the travelers on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. We look forward to
continuing our relationship with HMSHost and appreciate their financial
commitment to our travel plaza redevelopment project. We are proud that the
buildings will be designed by a Pennsylvania architect and reflect
architectural elements common to Pennsylvania, and that many of the food
offerings include Pennsylvania-based firms," said Joe Brimmeier,
Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission CEO.
"We thank the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission for their vote of confidence
and this opportunity to provide Turnpike travelers with outstanding new
plazas that feature innovative dining and retail options with the highest
levels of guest service," said Elie W. Maalouf, President and CEO of
HMSHost.
In addition to the many familiar brands already known to Pennsylvania
Turnpike travelers -- Starbucks, Burger King, Sbarro, Roy Rogers and
Hershey's Ice Cream -- the Pennsylvania motorway will be the first in the
country to feature top restaurant and Pennsylvania-based brands. New brands
making their way into the motorway service plazas include The Doggery,
Philly Steak & Gyro, Bassett's Original Turkey, Famous Famiglia,
Chick-fil-A, and Brioche Doree Café & Bakery, as well as Chili's Too and
Outback Outpost, featuring their popular appetizers, burgers, salads, and
sandwich offerings.
"Whether it is burgers, chicken, steaks, salads, wraps, a hand-dipped ice
cream cone, or special gifts and souvenirs we believe the Pennsylvania
Turnpike will have something to satisfy everyone's taste and make their
travel experience on the Pennsylvania Turnpike more enjoyable," said Brian
Gallant, Senior Vice President, Motorway Operations for HMSHost.
The service plaza redevelopment will be phased in over the next five to six
years so as not to disrupt service to customers of the Pennsylvania Turnpike
system. Travelers will be able to get regular updates which will be posted
on the Turnpike website at www.paturnpike.com.
