The next Michigan license plate could feature historic cars, images from the Great Lakes or one of the state's popular landmarks.
It's now up to a decision-making panel assembled by the Secretary of State to rifle through more than 1,000 ideas sent in during the past month as the state works to create a new lasting image on the tail end of Michigan vehicles.
Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land issued a challenge to residents less than a month ago to send in their own design ideas for the new plate, which replaces the state's No. 2 most popular license plate that shows the Mackinac Bridge. The deadline for entries was midnight Friday.
Land said she has been impressed with the participation from public and private schools, which sent in many of the entries despite learning about the challenge at the end of the school year.
Senior citizens and amateur and professional artists also sent in impressive designs to replace the license plate, Land said.
"I'm very impressed with the amount of entries," she told The Associated Press in an interview. "I was a little concerned heading into the end of the school year, but the teachers really came through."
