"Intercounty Connector Wins Federal Approval"
"Construction on 18-Mile Highway Will Start This Fall"
_Washington Post_ - Tuesday, May 30, 2006
Excerpt:

'Maryland Gov. Robert L Ehrlich Jr. (R) announced today that the
intercounty connector, an east-west suburban highway more than 50 years
in the making, has gained final approval from the federal government and
that construction will begin this fall.'

'The 18-mile road, with an estimated cost of $2.4 billion, would be the
most expensive new highway project in the Washington region. The
six-lane, tolled highway would cut through a mixture of parkland and
residential communities between the Interstate 270 and Interstate 95
corridors in Montgomery and Prince George's counties and claim
approximately 58 homes in its path.'

'Construction of the highway has been on and off state plans since the
1950s. As recently as 1999, the road appeared dead when then-Gov.
Parris N. Glendening (D) canceled an environmental study because of
concerns raised by local residents and the federal government about the
highway's effect on streams, wetlands and wildlife.'

'But it gained a new life in 2002 behind the bipartisan support of
Ehrlich, Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan (D) and several
members of the Montgomery County Council, who all won election after
making construction of the highway a central part of their campaigns.'

'Duncan, now one of two Democrats trying to unseat Ehrlich, did not
attend today's announcement in a field adjacent to Interstate 370, the
short highway spur between I-270 and the Shady Grove Metro station.'

I don't care what anyone else says, but mark my words, if Ehrlich loses his
re-election bid this fall, construction on this project will stop within 6
months of the new administration taking office.
