Yes, at work I get notice of these accidents via e-mail. I'm not sure that they
had confirmed it was a fatal when I got the notice, or not.

Not much new on the Mountain Parkway or US-23. Same for KY-80.

Sorry I didn't get to say howdy to you. I was stuck in the office at Jackson all
day. If you had been traveling last Friday, you'd have encountered a bridge deck
failure on the last bridge on the Mountain Parkway, just before it ends at US
460. A large section of the bridge deck collapsed and they just got it repaired
on Thursday. They temporarily patched with a steel plate and ended up pouring
concrete on Tuesday, then replacing the steel plate until the concrete cured.
The steel was supposed to be removed Thursday, the day before your trip.

Had you gone a few miles further south on US 23 instead of turning onto US
460/KY 80, you'd have seen the construction on the new US 460 that will go to
Elkhorn City and pass by the Breaks.

There was mention on MTR last week of the Multi-State Route 80. Don't
know why 80 seems to be a big deal. In VA it is a narrow winding
cowpath overflowing with coal trucks. Imagine going uphill behind a 6
MPH overloaded coaltruck, and down the same hill comes another at 60
barely staying on the road..

I haven't driven VA 80, other than the co-signed section with VA 83 near Haysi.
VA 83 is a pretty pleasant drive with lots of climbing lanes, as I'm sure you
noticed.

VA-83 wasn't any better, although it did give me a chance to go East
and West at the same time, while in reality I was heading south.

Actually I think VA 83 is a pretty decent road through that part of the country,
with the exception of that part just east of Clintwood.

Did you take VA 83 all the way to Pound and then US 23 to Wise?

At Norton there are still a lot of cut-out markers. On one street there
are markers for "Old Business US-23/Alt 58" south of the tracks, while
the current route is north of the tracks. One of the assemblies on the
old road was pulled out of the ground and the whole thing, pole and
all, was leaning on a light pole, ripe for the taking if I was so
inclined. (No I didn't take it, but I was tempted!)

I'd love to have a Virginia cutout!!!!

After crossing into TN US-23 is a freeway marked as I-181 as discussed
on MTR last week. After crossing I-81 it changes to I-26 but there is
nothing marking such a change until you see a reassurance marker a mile
or so south of I-81.

Once in NC the road is marked as Future I-26, and the markers have no
"Interstate" lettering in the red field. I recall reading about that in
MTR some time ago. I seem to recall that this was just US-23 the last
time I was thru here.

That has changed. When I was last there, a week after the road opened, the signs
were true Interstate 26 signs all the way down to where US 19 joins the route.

Is US 23 fully signed on the freeway in NC south of the state line? When I was
there, both I-26 and US 23 were fully signed on the freeway in Tennessee but US
23 disappeared in NC and it magically appeared on the old surface route.

Stopped at the NC Welcome Center on Future I-26 (US-23) just south of
the TN line, This is quite probably the nicest welcome center I have
ever been in. Absolutley gorgeous. Even had a photo display by MTR's
own John Lansford nect to the fire place.

That has been added since I was there. Maybe I'll have to go back!!!

They asked me to provide some photos from during construction several
months ago. I gave them enough pictures that they can rotate the
exhibit several times before reusing any photo.
