That's a pretty astounding amount of seizure there. Is Newport
economically depressed?

Newport is one of these "industrial suburbs", which means it's not the
largest city in the metropolitan area but nonetheless looks and acts like a
central city. These are among the most economically depressed places in
America, and Newport is relatively poor. However, the neighborhood targeted
by the eminent domain abuse in this case wasn't really poor (though not rich
by any means). I think this neighborhood was targeted because it was near an
Interstate and would be of more value for commercial developers.

Keep in mind that this use of eminent domain wasn't even for a public
project but for a private business. It's bad enough when a property owner is
paid far less than what their property is worth to build a road or some
other public project, but in this case the project isn't even public!

Hey, that's what happens when the population elects loonies in government. They pander to big-business, and in your case that you documented, it all goes straight to big-box retailers. It's sad that these historic (and new) homes must be destroyed for "progress."
