"Highway Expected to Get Green Light"
_Washington Post_ - Thursday, March 23, 2006

I was struck by this:

..... "18-mile, six-lane highway ..... The highway's estimated cost
is $2.4 billion and could rise to $3 billion ."

In this forum, one of the favorite and recurring topics is often
threads about roads that are needed in urban areas and must be bult to
reduce
congestion and improve the overall transportation network.

I've often asked what the costs of such roads would be - and not
infrequently,
someone will quote the costs associated with a mile of rural
interstate.

Unless I've done my math wrong - the per mile cost of the ICC is
somewhere
around $150 million per mile.

The "wish list" for the Wash DC Metro Area (and for that matter many
other US metro areas) contain multiple similiar projects such as the
ICC.

So.. a very simple question. Are future projects similiar to the ICC in
the Wash Metro
Area financially feasible and sustainable? Can we build a 1/2 dozen
more Springfield
Interchanges or a new Techway Bridge or a Western Corridor Bypass, et
al?

I'm looking at the current session of the Virginia General Assembly
where there is a
BIG fight over how much more money might be generated for
Transportation in Virginia and the
basic parameters range from about $500 million to $1 billion new money
annually.

This is for ALL of Virginia.

Realistically, how much will NoVa likely net at the end of the day -
even a 'good' day?

$200, $300, $400 million .... per year?

Does anyone really think that NoVa will get 40% of the total annual
funding for Virginia Transportation funding?

No matter. Let's assume they do. How many projects like the ICC can
NoVa build
with that kind of money - even assuming that ALL of that $400 million
could be
devoted to a single project?

I'm NOT arguing that no new projects should be built but I guess I am
asking -
given the limited prospects for new money - what major project should
come next
for NoVa?

.
