People who drive or live along U.S. 1 in Franklin and northern Wake
counties will have a chance this week to help determine the best way
to reduce accidents and improve traffic flow through the busy
commercial corridor.

State and local planners have invited the public to an information
workshop for U.S. 1 transportation improvements from 3 to 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday at The Living Word Family Church, 10520 Star Road, off Capital
Boulevard between Burlington Mills Road and U.S. 1A in Wake Forest.

The public is invited any time in that period to contribute ideas to
freeway and transit options being considered for the 14-mile U.S. 1
corridor between Interstate 540 in North Raleigh and U.S. 1A (Park
Avenue) in Franklin County.

To learn about the U.S. 1 corridor study, go to www.ncdot.org/
~us1study/ or call the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization
at 807-8513. Directions to Living Word Family Church are online at
www.lwfc.org.

Improving US 1 is going to be difficult and expensive no matter what
alternative is decided upon. The best one IMO is to create a
superstreet type of highway, with some interchanges at busy crossroads
and service roads elsewhere. That will cost a lot in R/W and take a
long time to build due to traffic issues, though.

Are you thinking on the lines of a 'Texas' freeway (mainline freeway/one-way
frontage roads/feeders with slip ramp interchanges) here?

No but that could be an option. One of the alternates is an
expressway with all adjacent properties getting access by service
roads on either side. The service roads tied to already existing
crossroads that intersect US 1.

I've been thinking more and more of that as the best possible solution to
upgrading busy suburban streets to freeway standards with the most minimum
possible ROW takings and other related disruptions.

It would work, but the existing crossroads would create problems
unless removed completely and replaced with grade separations.
