ahhh... how much electricity do folks use at 2 a.m. when their
hybrids will be recharging?
Most people are asleep at that time, Larry. They'll plug in their
vehicles when they get home, which is prime electricity use time.
... and timers are how difficult to do?
Unless the cost comes down to something affordable for most people,
this is going to be a minor concern for years into the future,
especially if electricity rates start going up for other reasons.
I dunno... if you live up in NoVa.. hybrids are selling like
hotcakes...
NoVa is hardly representative of the entire US, though. Higher
income, more mobile population.
if gas goes to $3 and you can "fill up" a hybrid for a buck... do
you think that some folks will connect those dots?
decade.. especially if more nukes come online...What makes you think those are going to get built any time soon?
Shearin Harris down here outside of Raleigh was one of the last
nuclear power plants built in the US, and it took two decades from
start to finish, and they cut it down from four reactors to one to
save money.
nukes or no nukes... same result... I'd say... but think, in general,
when folks presented with more air pollution and more mercury
pollution.. and greenhouse "terrorism".. they'll slide toward nukes
and plugging in hybrids overnight.. just helps the process along.
Your prediction of a 'decade' to change where power comes for vehicles
is a pipe dream, Larry. Hybrids are already being accused of
inflating their efficiency to drive up sales, and their higher than
normal maintenance costs as well as high up front costs are not making
them so sought after as you would like.
Gee.. the article said that THIS SUMMER.. Toyota might come up with
a "plug-in" Hybrid... I'd say if that happens.. and Bush pisses off
Iran..
we're good to go... :-)

Maryland and District consumers angry at the record electric bills
they will receive this summer might want to recall the promises made
by proponents of deregulation seven years ago. If they do, they'll be
even angrier.
....
The District, Maryland and Virginia, along with much of the nation,
are wrestling with the ramifications of deregulation at the same time
that the cost of producing electricity is skyrocketing. But as energy
prices have soared, electricity rates have gone up more in deregulated
states than in regulated ones.
Though Northern Virginia residents won't feel the full effects of
deregulation until 2010, when rate caps expire, caps were lifted for
Pepco customers in the District and Maryland several years ago,
resulting in steady increases, including a 38 percent jump for
suburban Maryland and 12 percent for the District
