The states for the most part saw no need to build new Interstate
highways to closely parallel turnpikes, and they had many Interstate
highways to build, in parts of the state that had no superhighways.
I'm quoting the Chicago Tribune Article:
1956-11-26
Chicago Tribune (IL)
U. S. Rejects Freeway Project to Madison
"Owing to a gov. policy not to support freeways that would duplicate
toll routes, the fed.
road admin. has declined to pay 90 percent of an expressway on this US
12 location..."
You can look it up at infoweb.newsbank.com
Again, I'm not blaming Ike, but VP Nixon-- he's a suspect..
And a newspaper article is the Impeccable Gosple Truth?
It's false.
Colonel Robert McCormick's Tribune in the 1950's, never.
But at least they knew how to spell, not these old-fangled ways with
silent letters and such.
.I gave you examples where toll-free Interstates were later
built parallel to turnpikes.
Parallel for short portions, but for cross-state travel, few options
exist. The IL-WI border
has to be the only interstate crossing were all IHS roads are tolled.
There are others, such as the New Jersey Turnpike being later paralleled
by I-295, I-195 and I-287; the coastal section of the Florida Turnpike
being later paralleled by I-95, and the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel Thruway
being bypassed by I-695 west of the city.
From I-295 Northbound the choices are US 1 and US 130, I-195 won't get
you to NYC. So, its NJTP or surface streets to New England....JG
Most of the New Jersey Turnpike can be bypassed by toll-free
Interstates, particularly true for traffic bypassing NYC.
