The highest point in WV is only 4,800-something feet (Spruce Knob, located near
Seneca Rocks, north of this area).

I agree with you that I-64 is better than the old routes, but it is hardly the
most direct through route from Kentucky to Washington DC. The 79-68-70 corridor
serves that purpose much better. Reason being the 60-mile southward jog to
Beckley and the 30-mile northward jog to Staunton on the 77 and 81 multiplexes
respectively.

"This area" means central, southeastern and south-central Kentucky. Of course
the unfinished portion between Pikeville and Grundy, the curvy nature of the
four-lane from Grundy to Richlands, and the 55 mph speed limit all serve to slow
traffic on this corridor.
