Yes, but odd that you should mention this. Because of your query I went
back and noticed that the street map itself doesn't zoom in any closer
at its highest level than the satellite image does; it's just that on
satellite, the button bar shows it as being two zoom levels out.
Nevertheless, the relative distance scales are the same on street map
at highest zoom versus satellite/hybrid at two levels out. Maybe
they're reserving two more zoom levels of detailed photos! In any case,
that leads me to suspect it's nothing sinister; it's probably the same
highest zoom level but moved back two buttons on the bar. Toggle baclk
and forth btw satellite and street map and you'll see the button move
although the scales stays the same.
And yes, Google used to have higher level of zoom; I used to be able to
make out my son's pickup truck in my driveway quite clearly. Now I can
barely see my backyard deck. It was changed a while back, but I had
downloaded the former image already before they eliminated the
close-ups.
