Re: NJ TPKE question

Yep, seen them many times.

The actual bridge outer support walls on each of the newly constructed
overpasses are built at a 90' angle to the road, and they all seem far
enough back to allow 4 lanes with ease. As construction progresses,
they add in a slopped concrete wall from this bridge wall down towards
the roadway that appears to be just for show, and would permit a 3rd
lane without any additional modifications In other words, they could
take this sloped wall out to add a 4th lane, and it would have no
effect on the bridge structure themselves.

There are 5 overpasses that have been replaced. From South to North,
the 2 you mentioned - Rt. 48 and Rt. 45. Additionally, the Exit 3
offramp overpass (completed), Clements Bridge Rd. overpass (about 1
mile North of Int. 3, completed), and the Rt. 73 overpass (work in
progress) are also getting replaced and widened. The Rt. 42 overpass
was replaced in 1998 as part of the Rt. 42 widening project, and
appears to have been given the same treatment (walls far enough back
for 4 lanes, but ready for a 3rd lane w/o modification). There are
approximately another 30 bridges that either need to be widened or
replaced in order for the turnpike to be widened between Exits 1 & 4.

Oddly, if you're travelling thru Int. 3, the SB outer wall appears to
be angled inwards towards the roadway slightly, as if the road may be
widened from Int. 4 to Int. 3, with a right lane drop occuring at Int.
3. I've also noticed between Int. 4 and 3 SB several instances where
trees and brush have been removed along the roadway. Not sure if this
means anything in the short term or not.

I've never heard of any widening plan other than adding a 3rd lane NB &
SB between 1 and 4, and even that doesn't seem to be on the near-term
priorty list as the new Int. 1 plaza handles traffic flow with ease
now, and the pending 95/PA Turnpike Interchange will warrant a wider
roadway between Exits 6 & 8A.
