I'm planning my third annual/fourth trip to Columbia, SC, this spring. Though I'm not entirely sure of my route, I haven't ruled out roaming around in Appalachia like I usually do on the way down there. My goals this year are to do US 33 across IN and OH, see the New River Gorge bridge on US 19, and possibly make a two-day return via Atlanta and Memphis (future I-22). You'll need to read the summaries below to understand why I want to see US 33; I'm hoping to complete major US expressways/freeways in Ohio.
ISTR mtr'ers mentioning US 129 or some other road as being lightly-travelled and favored by motorcyclists, and downright dangerous because it is so curvy. The most recent post I remember mentioned that it doesn't change much in elevation.
A search for "US 129" in my extensive library of posts has turned up nothing. Anyone have any clue which road was mentioned? Suggestions for other similar roads? I'm thinking major US roads like US 460, but suggestions for desirable side trips are welcome.
Do a search for "Tail of the Dragon". US 129 is heavily travelled by motorcyclists and sports car enthusiasts, especially in the spring and fall. NC 143 is also becoming popular with them as is the Cherohala Skyway. US 129 climbs upward to Deals Gap at the TN/NC line and then drops down towards Robbinsville, NC.
One of the whacked-out thoughts that I had recently was that if for some odd, bizarre reason that proposed 'I-3' would ever come to be that the 'Dragon's Tail' section of US 129 could be taken over by the NPS as a potential extension/connection of the Blue Ridge and Foothills Parkways, it is that kewl of a drive.
I drove US 129 in that area in my 1997 Chevy Cavalier during my 2004 roadtrip (late june) and LOVED it. By all means, check it out.
