Based on the 2005 official state map, and on the project numbers, the
loop will be VA-262 south of US-250 (west of the city), and the loop
will be VA-275 north of US-250.
The thought that had occurred to me, is to utilize either the north side
of the loop or the south side of the loop, for a US-250 bypass of the
city, whereby US-250 would also overlap a section of I-81. Traffic on
US-250 in Highland County is very light, like less than 600 AADT in
places, so US-250 west of Staunton isn't much of a through route, but
still a US-250 bypass of Staunton might be a good idea, and that solves
the issue of having two different state route numbers on the bypass
loop.
The current bypass project will replace the current at-grade
intersection of US-250 and VA-275, with an interchange with
VA-275/VA-262 passing on a bridge over US-250, which will provide for a
smoother transfer of traffic between the two highways. The new Staunton
Loop will be 4 lanes divided in the US-250 interchange area, for over
1/2 mile on either side of US-250.
VA-275 is a 2-lane limited access highway on a 4-lane right-of-way, with
3 at-grade intersections.
VA-262 will also be a limited access highway, and with no at-grade
intersections, and with 6 interchanges. The entire VA-262 is on a
4-lane right-of-way, with 4 lanes built on the section between I-81 and
just west of VA-252 Middlebrook Avenue, and with 2 lanes built on the
section between west of VA-252 and just south of US-250, and with 4
lanes built through the US-250 interchange area.
Since VA-262 is a freeway, with about 1/2 of the length with 4 lanes,
that IMHO would be the most logical candidate for a US-250 Staunton
Bypass.
The projected 2019 AADT on this under construction section of the
Staunton Loop, is 6,700 with 5% large trucks, and that is well within
the capacity of the mostly 2-lane limited access highway.
