Thanks both for the reponses, very informative. My ultimate goal is to
provide a service to small business owners that would allow them to
log into a website and view all receipts tied to a specific card. The
actual store receipt is not printed at the time of the sale providing
there is an online account to send the data to. Is there ever a
requirement or need for an "original" receipt when itemizing business
related tax items or again for an audit?

Maybe not a requirement but as a practical matter many state auditors (and
IRS) prefer "paper" receipts with full descriptions and an easy way to
trace the item purchased to the disbursement of funds. If you don't
satisfy their audit requests - it's not a good day!
