I can answer your questions, once I know what it is you mean, because I'm at
a loss as to what income, in and of itself, is used for the overpayment that
produces a tax benefit AND the income gets refunded.

It's my understanding that withholding, estimated payments, and refundable
credits can cause overpayments and be refunded.
