Disability Question

I'm interested to know how a self-employed individual would claim
disability when it comes to income tax issues. Specifically, this person
hasn't been able to work for several months due to a physical condition
and recently withdrew some IRA money to pay the bills. I understand that
such withdrawals receive favorable treatment when they are used to support
someone who is unable to work due to disability. An IRS publication,
reference to the code, or similar documentation would be most helpful.
