I know a lot of people who are convinced that if they do some
contracting work, and it comes out to less than $600, then they don't
have to report it if they don't receive a 1099-MISC. I guess they
think that there's no way the IRS can find out about it? Anyways, I've
always thought that those people are wrong, but I can't find anything
to back me up. Does anyone have a link that talks about this? I
couldn't find anything on the IRS web site.
Check IRS Publication 525, Taxable and Nontaxable Income. You won't find
anything telling you that if you don't get a 1099 it's not income.
