Basis Calculation

For all you rental property owners out there, how do you calculate basis on
your properties?

I picked up a book from John T. Reed where he describes a few different
methods:

1. Purchase Price - % calc for Auditors Value of Land + Improvements

2. Appraisal Value - % calc for Auditors Value of Land
