Cows have magnetic sense, research indicates

[...]
German scientists using satellite images posted online by the Google
Earth software program have observed something that has escaped the
notice of farmers, herders and hunters for thousands of years: Cattle
grazing or at rest tend to orient their bodies in a north-south
direction just like a compass needle.

Studying photographs of 8,510 cattle in 308 herds from around the
world, zoologists Sabine Begall and Hynek Burda of the University of
Duisburg-Essen and their colleagues found that two out of every three
animals in the pictures were oriented in a direction roughly pointing
to magnetic north.

Google Earth is relatively new compared to the thousands of years the
scientists are hypothesizing about. It would be interesting to see if the
same numbers come up the next time Google Earth updates it's photos. They
may find that two thirds will now be facing east-west. Who knows which way
they were facing last decade?

On a sort of related note, I remember when I was very young, my dad
brought home a box of magnets that someone gave him at work. The box was
labeled "cow magnets", but as kids we just thought it was a funny name.
Little did we know, but they were actually fed to cows. Turns out cows eat
a lot of metal in the field, old nails, etc. The magnets collect the metal
in the stomachs. I'm not sure if they just passed, or were manually
removed. Maybe one of the rural guys will know. Anyway, maybe the magnets
play some role in the cow alignment, or not.

The metal stays in their stomach with the magnets. They're not removed.
