LED is good, also there are 12 volt fluorescent lights. I got a couple on
Ebay, sold as "work lights". Been meaning to wire them in. Put a 12 volt
battery in, and keep it charged. Use the 12 volt lights when the power is
off.

I realize he was looking to run what was already wired (but an
electric blanket? A scam by the electric company and really "a
blanket" in my opinion.) but what about going with some of the twelve
volt systems? Knew a guy with a basement apartment, and he ran twin
copper wires about six inches apart from the joists. He had 12v
lamps/bulbs with alligator clips to provide light where he wanted it.
A low tech version of the High Art concept you'll find at Ikea and
other upscale stores
But I've been thinking about such options myself, not necessarily
bare wires, but alternate lighting options for the new house. And 12v
LEDs seem to be a good idea. Any opinions?

My ham shack has 12V lighting and a 12V fan. My trolling motor
battery is in parallel (during the off-season) with my Astron power
supply should the power fail.
If I was having a home built, I'd stick with the 120V AC system. Keep
the lights on seperate circuits and use CFs. I'd have four 6V golf
cart batteries in series/parallel to provide (12V), and an inverter to
power the light circuits. And a dedicated 12V circuit to the
hamshack. The back-up batteries could be charged from the mains or
solar or whatever.
