Possibly because it wasn't the same thing - the ChiComs destroyed a
satellite in orbit that created nearly 46% of the current hazardous orbital
debris. The current intention is to bust up the satellite during re-entry
to make the debris smaller - not while it's in orbit. The difference is
that the debris field will not be left in orbit and will not threaten other
satellites. The Chinese created a debris field that threatens all current a
future satellites.

Yet when the chinese govt did exactly the same thing last year the yanks
were in uproar about it.
President Bush, acting on the advice of his national security
advisers, has decided to attempt to shoot down a malfunctioning spy
satellite that is expected to crash to Earth early next month, a
spokesman for the National Security Council said today.

The Pentagon's plan to shoot down a failed satellite with a missile
defense interceptor in the coming days is aimed at preventing toxic
fuel from reaching earth. But U.S. officials and experts said
yesterday it would also signal that U.S. missile defenses can be used
to counter China's strategic anti-satellite weapons.
