"We" owe nothing.
Yes, America does. Soldiers went to war for their nation, we cannot
abandon them as the VA has done under Bush.
They went to war for the government, not for me. I don't
owe them anything at all.
Do you expect the military to defend our shores in the future?
I hope that's what they do, instead of going off 10,000
miles to slay dragons.
They are dying and being injured in what they believe to be the honorable,
right, thing to do now. Yes, they are being used and abused by the very
people they trust to lead. That is our fault for putting authoritarians
in office.
If we refuse to honor and respect their efforts now then they will not be
here when/if America is attacked in the future.
And if any of them are killed or wounded defending our shores, I'll owe
them a great debt of gratitude.
It doesn't work that way though. We don't get the option of trashing them
for following orders then expect soldiers to offer their lives later.
But as to how much money I'll owe them -- that
will depend on whether I ever agreed to pay them. So far, I
haven't. I seriously doubt I ever will. So, how are our
shores to be defended? By the volunteer militia, as the
Founding Fathers intended. As was the case In Those Days,
their deaths were borne by their families, their wounds were
tended to by other volunteers, and their disabled old age
was aided by charity.
That was then, this is now. We both agree, it seems, that both Iraq and
Afghanistan invasions were unwarranted. Do you agree that after 9/11 we
had an obligation to exterminate bin Laden an his cohorts?
To do so requires much more than unpaid volunteer defenders. A
professional military is required along with all the infrastructure needed
to support that behemoth. Ugly but true.

The harm that Bush is doing to the military will be felt for a
generation.
Remember how the military sank to lower levels after Nam?
It takes a generation for people to forget that you don't volunteer to
willingly step into a meat grinder.
