One thing that annoys me is that US Presidents try to take credit for
everything that goes right in this country and are consequently blamed
by their opponents for everything which goes wrong. This sort of
politicking just confuses many of the voters. Had George Bush 6
months ago, or Bill Clinton 10 years ago gone out to California and
told the people living in those gorges to either clean out the brush,
completely fireproof their homes, or move, the locals would have told
them to mind their own business and go back to Washington where they
belong. These fires are not exactly a surprise.

The only surprise is that a mass burn off hasn't occurred sooner.
But these fires are largely confined to the periphery of the cities
in the LA basin. If the cities themselves caught fire then they'd have
a real problem.
Given the number of faults and underground rivers in the area, a
bigger catastrophe would come from a subterranean collapse.
