It doesn't matter tho. There's no trick to long-term water storage.
Just use clean water in a clean, air-tight container. Since there's
nothing in there for the bugs to eat they simply won't grow.

You still should sanitize the container; even a "clean" container will
pick up spores and bacteria from the air.

How does an air-tight container pick up anything from the air?

And even the cleanest water (unless heated under pressure above boiling)
is likely to contain spores and bacteria.

No, you don't need to boil water under pressure. Yes, you need a temp
higher than the boiling point of water to kill all the bugs, but you
can get that temp (and higher) with a rolling boil in an open pot. The
water/steam at the bottom of the pot is superheated. And the fast
circulation of the boil makes sure all the bugs get their turn at the
bottom. Yes, it even works at high altitudes. I've been doing it for
as long as I can remember (40+ years), from sea level to over 9000 ft,
and never got sick from the water. So have a few million other people.

Alternatively, you can sterlize water without boiling by letting it
sit in full sunlight in a UV-transparent container. It gives the bugs
a fatal sunburn. The common, clear 2-liter plastic pop bottle is just
such a container, as is any clear plastic bottle made of PET or PETE
(polyethylene terephthalate). Quartz glass is also UV-transparent but
isn't commonly used for much of anything. The glass used for jars and
bottles, window glass, and Pyrex will all block UV.

Either way, if your tap water is clean and your bottle/jug/drum/etc is
clean, you won't have any problems. If you are still worried, boil the
water as you drain it from your storage container.
