A retired US Army General says President Bush should sign the legislation
calling for the withdrawal of United States troops from Iraq.
Retired Army Lieutenant General William Odom, an outspoken critic of the
Iraq war, accused Bush of squandering US lives and helping al-Qaeda by
invading Iraq.
"I hope the president seizes this moment for a basic change in course and
signs the bill Congress has sent him," Odom said.
He called the war in Iraq a 'tragic mistake' and added the challenge the US
government faced was not how to win the war but how to recover from it.
"The president has let (the Iraq war) proceed on automatic pilot, making no
corrections in the face of accumulating evidence that his strategy is
failing and cannot be rescued. He lets the United States fly further and
further into trouble, squandering its influence, money and blood".
Odom served as the Army's top intelligence officer and headed the National
Security Agency during the Reagan administration.
