Minister shoots down Darling Downs evacuation fears

Queensland's State Government says it has no intention of evacuating two towns on the Darling Downs that are running out of water.

Warwick Mayor Ron Bellingham has confirmed that water has been carted in to Killarney's 1,200 residents for the last month and there are plans to do the same for the small town of Leyburn.

But Local Government Minister Andrew Fraser says residents should not be worried because there are no relocation plans.

"They should be very much assured that the State Government is working with and providing funding assistance to their local government to try and make sure that a suitable water supply is continued, while those particular communities confront the drought, that is relevant in their circumstances." he said.

Earlier Councillor Bellingham said the Warwick Shire council had never discussed evacuating towns.

"If we are not able to support Killarney I don't know what we're going to do with the rest of the shire," he said.

"Brisbane is going to run out of water before we're going to run out of water here.

"I want to assure the people of both towns there is no possibility, as far as I'm concerned, as far as any thought of evacuation. In my view that's just silly."

However, rural lobby group Agforce says some Queensland towns could soon be wiped out.

Agforce says some producers are now preparing to remove stock from their properties because it is too expensive to cart water to remote locations.

President Peter Kenny says the situation on the land has become dire.

"That is a big decision or a tremendous decision for any community to make to evacuate a town as a result of a lack of water, because the services of course will be depleted," he said.

"It's something that's probably never happened in this country before."
