Bugging out ashore, agains depends, is this a short term earthquake or
other natural or unatural disaster? Short term or long term? Can you
afford the weight/space? Or are we looking at some sort of mythical
end of the world scenario? To me the main value of a computer woudl
be to communicate, but that requires a functioning infastructure where
ever you are going to or hope to get to.

You bugging on foot or in a vehicle? If on foot, forget it there are
more useful things to fill the space. A PDF smartphone would be a
better choice if you can't break the electronic umbilical cord. Stuff
is no good if there is no electricity or phone system.

As far as compact data storage and information retrival goes a laptop
has a lot going for it as long as you can keep it running. So perhpas
the better question is assuming you can spare the space can you keep
it running long enough to justify the reliance on information only
available on it.

Being around books doesn't make a person educated. If that were the
case, then we could just walk through the library of Congress: in one
door and out the other and we would have our PhD.

Doesn't work that way. You have to get the information into your
head. That is the only *place* the information will do you any good.
And in an Emergency isn't the time to begin that process.

I suggest having some Reference books and maps. 10,000 e books on a
hard drive is good for what?
