THE PROBLEM

Those of us who grew up during the cold war were the first generation that had to face the extinction of humanity by war. War probably wouldn't have meant extinction - it could have, but most of the claims of wiping out humanity was commie bullpap put out by the Soviet enemy with the purpose of discouraging Americans from wanting to fight to keep their liberty.

As the cold war continued, other nations acquired this ability for "global death". At first, it had to be major powers, but soon even third world nations had the bomb.

The Soviet Union fell, but ironically, the threat didn't. We even saw periods were the alleged global death could be inflicted without the US being involved, say by a nuclear exchange between multi-religious India and Moslem Pakistan.

Further, other technologies soon were enabling true global death. Genetic engineering surpassed nuclear physics in its global death capacity some time ago. Further, it can be done by one well educated, intelligent man - as one fellow fabricated synthetic polio virus in his garage. Think if it, if he can make polio, why not something similar to small pox? Or worse!

Most people don't remember, but small pox killed more people in the 20th century than all the wars of that period - on the order of a half billion killed. That was just natural smallpox. Now, what if it was "weaponized"?

The fundamental problem is that our technology is growing at a rate that is putting global death into the hands of smaller and smaller groups, now down to some individuals, while the wisdom of our species has, if anything, regressed. Want proof of this regression? Read Shakespeare. Shakespeare died around 1616, but judge the level of wisdom by the conflicts depicted in his writings. Now, turn on just about any daytime TV show - say, Murry Povich, and compare the level of wisdom in Shakespeare to that today. QED.

To make matters worse, the upper classes in Shakespeare's time were educated in Grammar school in, well, grammar, logic and rhetoric. What do they teach in grammar school now? Politically correct gibberish. They are lucky to be able to read at some low level upon graduation of grammar school, much less be able to think wisely using logic. They don't think, they recite.

To summarize, technology is growing rapidly and is enabling mass destruction even as our wisdom, which we need to be able to wisely handle this technology, diminishes.

A FOOLISH SOLUTION.

Some leftist backed groups, like Pugwash, support the idea of suppressing technology as the answer. This is very unwise. It disarms those cultures wise enough to see the problem while doing nothing to stop those cultures with murderous intent. The basic premise, when it comes right down to it, is that we can put off our death for a few generations by not developing new technologies. If we don't develop it, we won't teach it to murderous third world cultures, who then won't use it to murder us.

Of course, what happens when the third world cultures develop it on their own? The technology is already out there! The only reason why they haven't picked it up is because of the same reasons they are backwards in the first place - they don't see any use for it, the ability to make an engineered bioweapon hasn't been demonstrated and they are too ignorant to see that the technology works. The first time someone releases a GE Bioweapon, there will be every kind of depot dictator out there from the Communist Koreans to every Islamic state out there working to copy it for towards world destruction.

These groups such as Pugwash see technology, not man's foolishness, as the problem. Their approach is doomed to failure. Their approach, even on the face of it, is foolish. Technology is what humans do!

A LOGICAL APPROACH

Take it as a given that global megadeath is going to happen. As the technology advances, the capacity to bring about global megadeath falls into more and more hands, progressively more backward thinking hands, hands that progressively more willing to bring it about. It's a simple matter of odds - how soon before it falls into the hands of someone both willing and able to do it. Remember - synthetic polio made in the garage!

So, like Stephen Hawking said, and I said years before him, the solution is to get some of humanity off this planet. I think this solution is obvious, and with the authority of Hawking behind it, people respect this idea. They didn't years ago, however. This just shows the foolishness of humanity that they can't follow the logic but quickly agree with authority!

But, who do you want to take off the planet? If you take a representative cross section of humanity, you'll find that you've advanced the problem to an interplanetary scale. It's an uncontrolled evacuation of a quarantine area - the disease of illogic will simply spread with the movement. Soon, you'll find people using WMD on each other on the Moon and Mars. What good would that do humanity? It would make extinction a bit less probable, but far from improbable.

No, you must ensure that those who leave this planet, aren't carriers of the disease of irrational thinking and hateful beliefs. You may even need to genetically engineer some features of human behavior OUT of the new populations. The doggy like dominance behavior, the genetically linked need for religious beliefs, stupidity - they all must be removed from the human population if humanity is to go any further. What's more, a new culture must be invented, from scratch, for the new society.

The challenge, of course, is to get this new population off this planet before the human race eradicates itself and takes a developing new population with it. This may mean that there must be a way to preserve the new population even as it stays on earth.

Once safely way, this new population can look down from the heavens and watch nature take it's course. The inevitable WILL happen.

They might need to prevent the disease from spreading off the planet.
