I recently read an article in the Chronicle (for you who
don't know, it's THE newspaper of northern California) about
San Francisco's ability to cope with a major disaster like a
big earthquake. I've seen estimates that the next Big One
might kill 4,000+ and injure many times more than that in
San Francisco alone, not counting the many other cities in
the Bay Area. The Chronicle reports that officials in San
Francisco doubt that the city's hospitals could cope with
more than a few hundred injured people at one time. It
doesn't take much of an imagination to see that the next Big
One could be a disaster of unprecendented dimensions. And
that's only the problem of dealing with the wounded in the
hospitals.
There is also the "minor" problem that a major earthquake in
northern California could collapse the levees in the San
Joaquin/Sacramento delta, wiping out the supply of fresh
water to over half the population of California.
So what? Well, if you live in California, you really need
to be prepared for emergencies. No, I DON'T mean 3 days'
supply of bottled water. And if you don't, you might have
the opportunity to observe a human disaster of nearly
biblical proportions on your favorite cable news service.
Since so many "survivalists" seem to hate Californians, I
can only say, "Enjoy." It will be quite a mess.
It's not that survivalists hate Californians, we just hate stupid people.
And Cali seems to be exploding with stupid people.
