Thanks again everyone. I guess a semi auto pistol and pump action it
is. My revised list-

Pump Action 12 guage
Semi auto pistol (1911 or glock)
Bolt action 30-06
.22 semi auto

Id still go with a 308

So just to clarify, the main drawback of a semi auto is it doesn't fire
handloads as reliably?

No..it shoots good reloads quite reliably

Actually for the price you can't beat a M-1 Garand sold though DCM for
around $500. I've seen metal clips at $.50 each. The M-1 will reliably
fire 8 rounds as fast as you can pull the trigger. Even though it is
hard to mount a telescopic sight on, the iron sights are probably the
best around and a reasonable marksman should be able to hit a man sized
target at 250 meters.

I suggest 308..as military surplus is very easy to find, cheaply..and
frankly after the ballon goes up.;...308 from miltary stores will be
far easier to aquire than 3006

Military surplus for the bolt action gun in general might be good, too.
There are a lot of excellent condition Garands, Enfields, and Mosins
floating around out there that were designed to be absolutely reliable
in extreme conditions, are almost indestructible, and can be purchased
very very cheaply. And the ammo for them is usually available very
cheaply, too.

Usually.

(anyone else think 7.62x39 is getting scarce, these days? Someone or
something is for some reason sucking up massive amounts of what used to
be common surplus...)

O_O

FW. Who'd go for a revolver rather than a 1911. Just becaue I like
revolvers.

Most left handers like revolvers over autos because of the chucking of brass back at the shooter. I guess there are a few left hand brass chuckers but not many.
