As mentioned, have never been there. Have seen some nice
historical movies, read some nice historical books.
However, in last few decades, or even for most of my lifetime,
have been hearing stories of Brits so desperate to get out of the
cities and experience a bit of nature that farmers close to big
cities are actually required to provide access for city people
walking around their property.
Medieval 'right of way' laws
However, must admit that don't know if this is true or not. Can
tell you, though, that there are most Australian farmers are very
friendly. In fact, this is the friendliest country have been in,
which probably explains why I am still here. :-)

Sorry to mislead you guys. This was intended as humour and to highlight how
cheap these dugouts are!! Couldn't imagine dragging my 9 yo girl to CP.
She'd probably freak. The Mrs is keen tho!! I sometimes worry about her!

If you like prospecting or even "fossicking around" we have gold,
sapphires, rubies, even diamonds as well.
Maybe one day.
Still, I take it you are coming for the lifestyle, not to try to
get rich. With your electrical trades skills you could settle
down almost anywhere you wanted to, working for someone else in a
city or setting up your own business in some small bush town.
Or set up an import/export business. There are opportunities
here that your father and grandfather wouldn't have even
believed.
Were I you, I wouldn't settle down to work immediately if you
have a bit of extra cash. Rent or buy a car or van and drive
around a bit to get a "feel" for the country and its people.
This is the intention. May rent a campervan and do an extended tour of sorts
for a few months.
Sure, you can settle down in the middle of a capital city and
immediately start work, rent or buy a home, etc. On the other
hand, though this won't give you much of a look outside these
city areas.
Whatever you do, your daughter is going to have to adjust to a
different school system, perhaps at even a different grade level.
However, realize that if she comes here during the summer holiday
season and sees a bit of country Australia for 4 or 5 weeks she
is going to have a large advantage over a lot of Australian kids
who have never been outside the city limits. :-)
If all goes to plan, we could be there by October. Perfect.

Despite the old jokes, the Australian male approach to making
love isn't really an elbow in the ribs and a muttered "You awake
love?"
:-) :-)

However, it was a temporary job, don't know the current
qualifications. However, do know that unions are a lot weaker
here than used to be.
I say again, red tape is a nightmare and it seems that they are being
deliberately prevented
from working. I have spoken to guys there with first hand experience of
this. Some have been outright refused jobs on the basis that they are not
Australian.
Actually, I don't think you need worry. Union agreements are
fast disappearing in favor of individual contracts.
However, you said you had been in contact with recent migrants,
so if you feel any anxieties on any issues, why not directly
raise the questions with them? Why should they lie to you?
...And if you thought some Aussie unionist was trying to
impersonate a recent Pommel migrant, how long do you think it
would take you to find out?
I'm not an electrician, but if I started to use American terms of
"cycles" rather than "Hertz", or "ground" rather than "earth", or
couldn't tell you wire colors for active neutral and earth, or
describe consumer socket connections, how long do you think I
could fool you?
...And if you were someone trying to fool me or Lawrence Linkman,
how far do you think you would get? Not far, I suspect, and I'm
not even a qualified electrical tradesman. I just happen to know
a bit about it.
Anyway, keep in touch. I see no objection to discussing anything
on the group, but you do have a valid email address for me.
Do I?
Anyway, cheers guys
Andy
