I'm thinking of upgrading.
Anyone know of some cheap land? Little drawbacks like "no water" is no
big deal. Perferably in a county where the local tin-pot dictators will
leave you alone, and don't give a damn what you do on your own land as
long as you don't bug anyone else.
If you look on the web, most of it is overpriced scams to snare idiot
yuppies. You know, they take a big chunk of nearly worthless land, sell
it off in small lots at an outrageous mark up, promise to build a lot of
roads, sewers, wells, gulf courses and crap when it's 80% sold, and
then stop stelling when they sell half of the lots, screwing every one
they sold to while doing the aligator tear thing about not being able to
sell all their real estate. A big scam, really.
Where do you want to be?
A place where:
1) I have a lot of land, for cheap. It would be great if I had enough to
carve out a runway for a small homebuilt airplane.
2) There is as little government as possible. Any place with covenants
is right out. Not much in the way of building codes, building
inspectors, or local government hassels. Where I live now, the local
government has their damned fingers into every little damn thing. For
example, the runway.
3) Perferably, lots of solar energy.
4) A locality where if I want goats and chickens, I don't have to ask
the local government for permission.
5) A place where the population density is low, as well as local taxes.
6) A bit off the beaten path... I don't want to be a pit stop for the
hoards of people fleeing the city when they get nuked or bioweaponed by
the North Koreans, Chinese, Post Revolution Pakistanis, Iranians, Al
Qaeda terrorist.
I've seen places in Utah where you had to drive to a spring and truck in
your water. That seemed acceptable.
I am thinking that land that doesn't have much water available would be
cheaper - usually water is a big thing. I have some ideas about
collecting and storing rainwater in a huge cistern. I remember seeing
one on a place in Utah when I was a kid that did that - they were just
putting in the tanks.
Know of a place? How much per acre?
Are you interested in the Southern Appalachia mountains?
Strider
I donno. When I think Appalachia, I hear banjos and think "Deliverance".
Not at all. Just liberal bashing of a conservative part of the country.
In fact, just the opposite is true. The rural areas are heavily into
God and country. Most are dry. Most people are dry. Any form of
sexual expression outside of traditional marriage is considered sinful.
I accept what you say is true, and plead that I was propagandized by left wing communist in Hollywood.
You can take your pick. Live in a desert or near Baptists. Either is
scary. ;-)
Something biblical about the desert...
